Egg White Allergy Confirmed

At 12 months, we gave Peyton his first taste of egg. He promptly broke out into hives and we rushed him to the doctor's office. By the time the doctor saw us (about an hour and half later), the hives had completely cleared up. The doctor gave us a couple options, one of which was to wait a couple of months and try again.

At 14 months, we tried again but this time we only gave Peyton egg yolk. He didn't react, and so we've continued to give him just egg yolks since then.

At his 18 month check up, Dr. Glinder suggested that we proceed with getting tested to confirm whether or not Peyton is allergic to egg whites. He also could not give Peyton his annual Influenza vaccine as those vaccines are grown on egg embryos and may contain a small amount of egg protein. My allergist works in the same medical group and also happens to treat children, so Peyton and I saw him a couple weeks ago. He recommended that we do a spot test of both the Influenza vaccine and egg whites which we scheduled for this morning.

This morning, Peyton did not react to the Influenza vaccine and was able to get the full vaccine, but he did react to the egg whites. So, it's confirmed: Peyton is allergic to egg whites.

We can continue to feed him egg yolks and products that we've been feeding him that may contain cooked eggs (boxed pasta, packaged bread, home cooked pancakes, etc), but the doctor gave us a list of ingredients to look for (and avoid) going forward. This means that Peyton can't eat homemade breads, cake, frosting, cookies, anything with an egg wash, or anything cooked at a restaurant that serves anything containing eggs (there's too high of a chance for cross-contamination in a busy restaurant kitchen).

James and I have our work cut out for us, but the doctor is optimistic that this allergy will pass in the next few years. We'll try again in two years.

For more information on egg allergies, you can visit the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network web site.

Peyton is 18 Months Old!

We went and saw Dr. Glinder yesterday for Peyton's 18 month check up. The doctor continues to be impressed with Peyton's development. Peyton spent most of the appointment playing with the standing scale, balancing on the stand and sliding the counterweight up and down the side. Dr. Glinder is impressed with his balance and his confidence. :-)

Here are his 18-month stats:

Height: 33 inches, 72nd percentile
Weight: 27 pounds, 11.4 ounces, 74th percentile
Head Circumference: 48.3 centimeters, 66th percentile

Yes, you read that correctly; Peyton had a major growth spurt in the past six months! At all of his previous check ups, his height was always in the 20-25th percentiles, but he has shot up to the 72nd percentile!

I can't believe how quickly these 18 months have flown by. Peyton is doing so much now. He absolutely loves being outside. I think if it were his choice, he would live outside. It's the first thing he wants to do in the morning and the last thing he wants to do before going to bed - go outside! It really helps that my parents have a house with a yard where he can just play and play and play (he really only goes inside for meals, diaper changes, and naps).

He's a real stacking pro now, he stacks blocks, rings, anything that can sit on top of other things! And he's getting really adventurous on stairs - trying to walk up and down them while standing. It doesn't always work so well, but we're always there to help him (and the gates are still up).

His latest idea of fun is to pull all the toys out of his "catch-all" and then put them, or most of them, back. He'll stop when he finds something that he really wants to play with and then James or I put the rest back.

He always continues to love Curious George and the new PBS show The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot about That. He loves all the music in that show and George just makes him laugh. He's very musically inclined, always getting me and James to dance with him (with or without music). We have quite a bit of fun.

Peyton is ONE!

Well, my baby is technically a toddler now, I suppose!

Yesterday, Peyton turned ONE! James and I cannot believe how quickly the past year has flown by.

Peyton is such a fun little boy! He loves to play and sing and dance. And while he knows how to stack things, he prefers to tear things apart: stacked blocks, the classic Fisher-Price stacked rings, everything!

He's eating meat, fish, and chicken now too. Now that it's Spring, peas are in season. As I have time, Peyton and I had fun tasting different varieties of fresh peas. His order of preference: snap peas, English peas, and snow peas. I'm still cooking all of his food using organic fruits, vegetables, and meats (grass fed steak, home ground; organic air-chilled chicken breasts; fresh-caught Petrale sole). This kid eats better than us! And, I started introducing cow's milk, which he didn't refuse. So things are great!

We took Peyton in for his 12-month checkup with Dr. Glinder this morning. Dr. Glinder continues to be thrilled with Peyton's development. As he walked in, Peyton was standing on the examination table with one arm leaning against James (to hold himself up). Dr. Glinder was amazed because he said he doesn't often see many one-year olds who are able to do that. :-)

Peyton is taking a couple steps here and there but hasn't mastered the art of walking just yet. He can go very short distances as long as he knows there's something waiting for him on which he can hold. That's A-OK with me as it's hard enough to chase him around the house as he's a very speedy crawler. He can crawl from the front door to the kitchen in about 25 seconds. He definitely keeps me on my toes!

Here are his 12-month stats:

Height: 29 inches, 25th percentile
Weight: 22 pounds, 11.5 ounces, 50th percentile
Head Circumference: 46.5 centimeters, 54th percentile

And just a few pictures of my little man!

Peyton is 9 Months Old!!

It still amazes me just how quickly this year is flying by. It feels like we just brought Peyton home from the hospital a few weeks ago, and he's now 9 MONTHS old! Incredible.

We went to see Dr. Glinder today for his 9-month check up. He continues to be thrilled with his development. Peyton showed the "right" amount of stranger anxiety when he came in. And, he kept looking at James for reassurance while he checked out the doctor.

Dr. Glinder was surprised to hear that Peyton is standing up and cruising already, but given that James was an early walker, we're not too surprised ourselves. He was more surprised to hear that Peyton has already started "talking". His vocabulary is expanding and is bilingual! He now says "Mama", "Dada", "Daddy", "Papa" (my Dad), and has switched to calling my Mom "Abu". In addition, he says "Atta" which we finally figured out means "Alli esta" - Spanish for "There it is".

Dr. Glinder agrees with us that we're going to have an extremely active and, it seems, smart little boy, so we've got our work cut out for us (I wouldn't have it any other way!).

The visit started out with his measurements, so here you go!

Weight: 20 pounds, 9-1/4 ounces (52nd percentile)
Height: 27-1/2 inches long (25th percentile)
Head circumference: 44.5 centimeters (27th percentile)

He's getting so big - we had to upgrade him to a bigger carseat last month. We opted for the Britax Roundabout, a convertible carseat that holds babies from 5 pounds to 40 pounds. It converts from rear-facing to forward-facing, so it should be a while before we need to replace it (or rather them - we bought two; one for each car).

And, here are a few pictures to show you what Peyton is up to these days.

He just LOVES it when James throws him up in the air.

He loves to play with his blocks. (More on that below.)

And, as he's teething (no teeth yet), this is extremely typical for him: He'll pick up a toy.....

...and it immediately goes into his mouth!

He loves to play with his talking Cookie Monster. He picks it up by the eyes because it talks when you open his mouth.

He can stand up really quickly now. He can do it all in just one action. From his knees...

...to his feet in less than 2 seconds!

He likes playing in the kitchen. We got a new refrigerator last year that has a reflective black finish. Peyton is fascinated with his reflection in the freezer door. We've nicknamed his reflection "Pedro". Here he is kissing Pedro. Peyton loves giving kisses.

As I mentioned above, Peyton really enjoys playing with his blocks. We have confirmed that he can stack the blocks, but he doesn't really like to. He much rather prefers to knock them down. It makes it a fun game for us all as James and I will stack the blocks into various shapes and sizes, and Peyton bulldozes them!

As you can see, we're having a ton of fun. :-)

Peyton is SIX months old!!

Our little boy is growing up so quickly. I can't believe that Peyton is six months old today!

We were able to schedule his six-month check up with Dr. Glinder for this morning, so we started the day with a bath. Peyton still loves the water. And now that he's six months old, I get to look for a swimming class. Unfortunately most of the classes are held during the week in the middle of day, which isn't really conducive with my work schedule (full time). :-( But, I'll figure something out because this kid needs to be in water!

All fresh and clean!

Peyton's eyelashes are getting SO long!

Peyton's favorite position when held. He gets a full view from this angle. :-)

Dr. Glinder continues to be impressed with Peyton's development. He's extremely social and attentive. He's babbling and reaching for things. He can rake his hands when grabbing for things too.

The logistical information:

Height/Length: 25.25 inches (12th percentile)

Weight: 17 pounds, 12.5 ounces (57th percentile)

Head Circumference: 42.8 centimeters (25th percentile)

He also got another round of shots which he didn't like (two in each leg plus a liquid one), but he got over it quickly.

Here's a little video taken this morning while we were getting ready to go to the doctor's office.

Peyton is Eating Solids!

Peyton started eating solid foods on Friday! Over the past month, he became increasingly interested in food. At his doctor's appointment last week, Dr. Glinder said the final 'test' was to see if he grabbed at food which he started doing the next day. As she has over 20 years of experience introducing food to infants, I deferred to my Mom as to what to start with (and with Dr. Glinder's permission). Mom finds that oat cereal is a little more gentle on infants' stomachs so that's what we started with.

Friday morning, I prepared some oat cereal and headed over to my parents' house. As I wanted to capture the moment, I let my mom have the honor of feeding him. He loved it!

Friday night we noticed a few pimples on his chin. Peyton is quite the little drool monster, so I figured it was just that.

Since it went well on Friday morning, James and I decided to feed him more yesterday morning. He loved his high chair, and really enjoyed his meal! Making it even more special, the spoon I used was MY baby spoon. It's the perfect size for his little mouth.

Unfortunately, the "acne" from Friday night spread over yesterday afternoon, so it looks like Peyton is intolerant to oats. He is starting food a little early (though many children do start as early as 4 months), so we'll give it a few days to clear up and then will try rice cereal. We'll reintroduce oats in a few months.

4 Month Doctor Visit

Today was Peyton's four-month check up appointment with Dr. Glinder. Dr. Glinder continues to be happy with Peyton's development. He was surprised to see that Peyton plants his legs down when held up on the table. It looks like he will be an early walker, just like his Daddy was (at 9 months). By the way Peyton kept kicking his legs while lying down, we all agreed that swimming lessons will be a must as soon as he turns six months (along with running and kicking and cycling when he starts walking and beyond). We are going to have one active kid!

Peyton is also showing more interest when we eat, so once he starts grabbing for our food, we'll start attempting solid foods - typically begins within 4-6 months. I've got my Beaba Baby Cook ready to start preparing all his food freshly rather than buying pre-processed food or dry cereal. Living in California, there's just no excuse to not go fresh.
:-)

Peyton's measurements were as follows:

His "height"/length is 24 inches, putting him in the 15th percentile among other male babies his age.

His weight is 15 pounds, 1-1/4 ounces, 52nd percentile.

His head circumference is 41.1 centimeters, 20th percentile.

It's funny to think that he's "small" by percentile comparisons because he just looks so big to us!

Pictures to come later. :-)

Two-Month Doctor Visit

Peyton had his two-month doctor's appointment this morning. Dr. Glinder is very happy with his progress.

He is 22-1/2 inches long (29th percentile) and weighs 12 pounds, 1.8 ounces (56th percentile). His head circumference is 39.1 centimeters (26th percentile). So, he is small for his age (but what would you expect with 5'4" parents?) but his weight is average.

As part of every appointment, Peyton's socialization skills are also checked. He's smiling, cooing, and following people with his eyes. Dr. Glinder was very impressed and says that he is ahead of schedule and is socializing like a 3-month old! James and I are very proud and will continue to read to him, sing to him (he'll "sing" [coo] along sometimes), and talk to him.

The appointment ended with three vaccinations - two shots in his thigh and one oral vaccination. He really didn't like the taste of the oral vaccination and he REALLY did not like the shots (his high-pitched cry got even more shrill on the second shot), but he calmed down relatively quickly and has been sleeping for most of the day. He's a little more fussy than usual, as can happen when infants get shots, so I have the infant Tylenol ready, just in case.

A couple shots of our sleeping little guy. He no longer fits in 90% of his newborn clothes, so we've moved him up to 3-month clothes which are still a bit roomy.

One Month Stats

Yesterday was Peyton's one month visit to the doctor. We got to meet his primary care physician at last - he was at a conference the week Peyton was born. Dr. Glinder was referred to us by a coworker/friend of mine; he's bee caring for her now 6-year old daughter since birth. Peyton responded really well to him so I think he's a keeper!

Peyton now weighs 9 pounds, 14 ounces and is 22 inches long. His head circumference is 37.7 centimeters. As a reminder, he was 7 pounds, 1 ounce at birth. He measured 19.25 inches and his head circumference was 34.8 centimeters.

Dr. Glinder is extremely pleased with his growth and overall progress. And, as with everyone who meets Peyton for the first time, his first reaction was "Wow, look at all that hair!". :-)

But the visit didn't end as nicely as it had started as it was time for Peyton's second Hepatitis-B shot. The poor thing was happily gurgling until the needle went in at which point he let out a blood curdling howl. I picked him up right away and was able to console him, but for the rest of the day, he wasn't happy unless he was in my or James' arms - which we happily obliged him with.

Here's a picture of Peyton in James arms. He really is growing!

He always looks at James like this. He perks up when he hears his voice and follows him with his eyes when James is walking around in his line of sight. Very cute!
